Le nozze di figaro

St Paul's Church, Rectory Grove

Wedding bells will be ringing out over SW London this July as the acclaimed St Paul’s Opera presents Il Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro).

Mozart’s much-loved comedy opera will be the highlight of SPO’s year, with fully staged “summer picnic” performances at St Paul’s Church, Rectory Grove, Clapham on Friday and Saturday 5th and 6th July (with the option to picnic first in the lovely grounds of the church).

The opera will be performed in its original Italian (but with surtitles so everyone can follow the fun) and the action has been moved to an English stately home at the outbreak of the Second World War.

However, the work’s themes – subterfuge, the undermining of authority and unwanted sexual advances – are just as relevant today as they were in 1786, when Il Nozze di Figaro was premiered in Vienna.

A talented cast includes a number of new faces – and voices – to St Paul’s, though continuity is provided by SPO founder Patricia Ninian (soprano) who takes on the role of housekeeper Marcellina as well as producing the opera. SPO’s Figaro is directed by Tony Baker with musical direction from Panaretos Kyriatzidis.
