Crime in Clapham down by 25%

Over the last year This is Clapham BID has been working extensively with local businesses and the Police to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour taking place in Clapham at weekends and we are pleased to report that crime has fallen significantly compared to the year before. This includes a reduction in violent crime by 25% and a reduction in theft by 24%.

The BID funds and delivers a range of projects that have helped achieve these results. Since August the BID has employed a team of  Safer Clapham Wardens who work every Friday and Saturday night. They provide a visible deterrence and gather intelligence on behalf of the Police.  Since August the Wardens have:

  • Prevented 124 incidents of anti-social behaviour
  • Identified and provided the Police with 103 pieces of criminal intelligence
  • Confiscated 774 bottles from people drinking in the street
  • Supported 70 vulnerable individuals

Other initiatives supported by the BID includes Safer Clapham branded uniforms for door security teams which give a visible sense of partnership working in Clapham. Businesses are also providing extra security and cleaning teams deployed as ‘Quiet Street Marshals’ and  40 businesses are now using a shared radio and intranet system provided through the Safer London Partnership, which enables the sharing of intelligence between businesses and the Police.

In delivering this programme Clapham enjoys the support of the Police.  The local licensing team continues to run regular Friday night briefings and maintains a regular presence in the area at weekends. The local Safer Neighbourhood Team have already taken action against individuals identified by the Safer Clapham Wardens, while every weekend Clapham benefits from up to 20 Special Constables patrolling the area.

The Clapham Methodist Church also continues to provide the invaluable Hub safe haven with support from This is Clapham, which is staffed by local volunteers and St John’s Ambulance medical staff. The Hub saves the NHS £100k a year in preventative care and helps hundreds of people to get home safely at night. More information about the Hub is available here.

Dave Hanson, the Chair of This is Clapham BID said “We welcome the positive news and look forward to continuing to strengthen our partnership work to make Clapham a welcoming and safe destination during the day and at night.”
