William Wilberforce

William Wilberforce was one of the most prominent members of the Clapham Sect, an English politician, philanthropist, and a leader of the movement to abolish the slave trade. He was the MP for Yorkshire and an Evangelical Christian. Wilberforce was convinced of the importance of religion, morality and education and championed causes and campaigns. He supported the campaign for the complete abolition of slavery, which led to the Slavery Abolition Act 1833.
